The Scotch Piper, Southport Rd, Lydiate, Liverpool L31 4HD
THE CANAL PIRATE RATING 5/5
The Scotch Piper is one of the oldest Pubs in Britain. And the oldest in Lancanshire. The Pub dates back to 1320 when a Scotch Piper decided to settle down and build a Pub. It was built round a Oak Tree which in part can be seen in the Pubs Tap Room. Which is slightly out of site. It has one of the smallest Bars I’ve scene. The Pub has been extended over time. But is still in all its glory. It is about 10-25 minutes walk from The Leeds Liverpool Canal depending where you more up in lydiate. But there is a Bus from Maghull and Liverpool City Center which goes directly to it.
I first went there with The Pirate Dog who sadly recently passed away. It had an open fire. And a freindly polite crowd not as eccentric as me. It sells a lovely Plum Porter (which knocks me for six !). It’s a Marstons Pub Tennacy but has a lovely gold IPA called the Piper. It normally has 3-4 Ales on Tap and one or two will be Guest Ales. The Ale is in perfect condition and looked after by a Cellar Manager. A freindly bearded Chap on a bicycle who told me some historic knowledge.
As the only Cockney Boater in neigbouring Maghull I had a warm welcome. Something I find across Liverpool, across Merseyside and Lancanshire. Its not a City or Town Pub but Rural. But you don’t feel like a stranger. And people are Polite.
If you come out the tiny Bar which has some seating and very cosy. There’s two other seated rooms. The Pub itself has a lovely Thatched Roof. These two Rooms I belive we’re further extensions. The Pub also has a large Beer Garden at the side and outside seating and large Parking Area. It hosts a Motorbike meet every week and also puts on Live Music and also has a Classic Car Meet reguarly. The pub maybe of the beaten path but is never empty. And has a huge local following. I have taken several freinds there and they fell in love with The Scotch Piper.
The Pub is Family and Dog Freindly. And due to its size and age the Toilets are in Out Building and has a Disabled Toilet. The Staff are all polite and very helpfull and welcoming. Hence why I go there when I can get time to. I have not tried the Rum or I would never get back to The Pirate Boat or in a Cab. There is a small Menu of light Snacks.
